Shan Jiang

Shan is a Postdoctoral Associate in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning (DUSP) at MIT, where they received their Ph.D. in Urban and Regional Planning in the Urban Information Systems (UIS) Group. Their research interests lie in the fields of spatial data analytics, big data analytics, geographic information science (GIScience), and the use of information and communication technology (ICT) in land use, infrastructure, transportation, and urban planning. Their research bridges data science with urban sustainability issues, moving from data to information, knowledge, and action. By applying data-driven approaches, they focus on the interactions among human activities and mobility, the natural and built environment, the society, and their connections with public policy.

Their research has covered global cities of Beijing, Bogota, Boston, Chicago, Lisbon, Riyadh, and Singapore, funded by the National Academies of Sciences, the Singapore National Research Foundation, the Portugal Foundation for Science and Technology, the Center for Complex Engineering Systems at KACST and MIT. They have also consulted for the Chicago Transit Authority, the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy, Cambridge Systematics, among others. They hold Master in City Planning, and Master of Science in Transportation degrees from DUSP and CEE at MIT; a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Urban Planning, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Peking University.
